When Should Exhaust Gaskets Be Replaced?

If the exhaust system has not been removed for many years or the motorcycle has accumulated high mileage, the gaskets often “stick” to the headers, collector or silencer. During disassembly they usually get damaged or destroyed and should always be replaced.

If the exhaust components can be separated easily and the gasket can be removed cleanly and without damage, replacement is not strictly necessary. However, especially during modifications or repairs, a preventive replacement is highly recommended to avoid future exhaust leaks.

Practical Advice from the XJR Specialist

Aftermarket gaskets are generally perfectly usable. However, with repeated assembly and disassembly, they are often not quite as durable as the original Yamaha gaskets. If you want long-term reliability, OEM quality is the best choice—especially at the cylinder head.
