Steel clutch plates are among the clutch components that often receive too little attention. Many XJR riders replace only the friction plates and then wonder why the clutch still fails to disengage cleanly or why gear changes do not feel as precise as expected (if any of the points listed below apply to your clutch, always replace the steel plates too). If the clutch still disengages cleanly and the steel plates are not discoloured or have not covered a high mileage, they can remain in the engine.
The torquey engines of the Yamaha XJR 1200, XJR 1300 and the legendary FJ 1100 and FJ 1200 put considerable strain on the clutch over many years. High mileage, frequent load changes and heat can discolour or warp steel clutch plates or cause wear marks. This often results in a clutch that does not disengage properly, notchy gear changes, judder when moving off or generally vague clutch operation.
My experience with Yamaha XJR models repeatedly shows that a clutch only works as well as its weakest component. New friction plates on worn steel plates often deliver only part of the desired result.
When should steel clutch plates be replaced?
- When they show blue discolouration from overheating
- When grooves or wear marks are visible
- When the clutch does not disengage cleanly despite new friction plates
- When the clutch slips under load
- During engine rebuilds or at high mileage
- When clutch operation is generally imprecise
My recommendation as an XJR expert
For a clutch that remains reliable over the long term, I generally recommend replacing the steel plates together with new friction plates. High-quality Vesrah friction plates (a Japanese original equipment supplier to Yamaha) have proved their worth for many years:

If you also want to give your clutch greater stability and a defined bite point, the proven Barnett clutch pressure plate is the ideal addition:

As the clutch cover must be opened for clutch servicing, I generally recommend replacing the clutch cover gasket too. This prevents leaks and saves you remedial work later:

The perfect solution: the complete worry-free clutch package
If you want to overhaul your clutch completely and avoid having to select all the individual components, I recommend my proven complete worry-free clutch package. The key components are already sensibly matched, and everything comes from one source:

After more than 27 years of experience with Yamaha XJR models, I can say that the clutch is one of the most important components for riding enjoyment and reliability. Treating friction plates, steel plates, pressure plate and gaskets as a whole gives you a clutch that disengages cleanly, engages reliably and withstands heavy loads over the long term.
If you have questions about the right combination for your Yamaha XJR 1200, XJR 1300, FJ 1100 or FJ 1200, I will be happy to advise you personally.
